Fort William Henry and the massacre
1757
Lake George, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Montcalm took the fort and granted the garrison honourable terms, but his Native allies, who had come a long way for plunder they were now denied, attacked the column as it left, killing and taking captives. Cooper made it the centre of The Last of the Mohicans, and his version, with its stock treacherous Indians, shaped how Americans understood the whole war for a century.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
