The earthworks on the cliff opposite Fort Washington went up from July 1776 and were renamed for General Charles Lee in September. When Fort Washington fell on November 16, this side became indefensible, and on the night of November 19 Cornwallis put thousands of British and Hessian troops ashore below the Palisades and marched them up. Washington and Nathanael Greene ordered the garrison out on the morning of the twentieth, leaving tents standing and cannon behind. The park on the bluff has reconstructed batteries and a blockhouse.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
