Fort Heath guarded Winthrop, then listened for the Cold War
1942
Winthrop, Massachusetts
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Fort Heath began as an early twentieth century Coast Artillery post covering the approaches to Boston and Winthrop harbors, garrisoned by the Army's Coast Artillery Corps. A Coast Guard radio station arrived in the 1930s, naval research followed, then wartime gun batteries and finally a Cold War radar station. Apartments and a small park stand on the site now, with a commemorative wall marking what was there.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
