Winter Hill holds Burgoyne's surrendered army

The hill was fortified in 1775 as one of the American works in the siege line that penned the British army inside Boston. After Saratoga, roughly 4,200 of General Burgoyne's surrendered troops were marched east and held on Winter Hill and neighbouring Prospect Hill from November 1777, guarded for about a year by men under General William Heath before the whole body was moved south to Virginia. The British regulars were quartered here and the German troops on the next hill, in barracks their officers complained about constantly. Nothing of the earthworks is left above ground and the hill is now solid three-decker housing.
