Fort Beggs, the week Plainfield barricaded itself in a preacher's cabin

In May 1832, with word of killings on the frontier spreading during the Black Hawk War, Plainfield settlers stacked logs from Reverend Stephen Beggs' barn and shed around his cabin and crowded 125 people inside. Beggs counted four guns, some of them useless, so the women melted pewter spoons, basins and platters into bullets and the men gathered axes, hoes, forks and clubs. The fort lasted about a week before the settlers left for Ottawa and Chicago. A monument put up in 1936 marks the spot.
