Fordham University, founded on a Bronx farm in 1841
1841
Fordham University, Rose Hill, Bronx, New York
Bishop John Hughes bought the Rose Hill farm and opened St. John's College here in 1841, then put it in the hands of the Jesuits soon after. Edgar Allan Poe, renting a cottage a short walk away, used to come over to argue scholarship with them. In 1936 the football line coached here picked up the name the Seven Blocks of Granite, and the right guard was a young Vince Lombardi. It is the oldest Catholic university in the northeastern states.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
