For sixty years the big amusement park on the river at the west end admitted white patrons only, the roller coaster, the pool, the dance hall, all closed to the Black families living around it. It was finally integrated in 1964, drew unrest as the neighbourhood changed, and shut for good in 1969. The rides came down. The name still means, to a certain generation of the city, exactly who was let in.
