Fire Barn 5, the last Elgin firehouse built for horses
1903
Elgin, Illinois
Elgin put up its fifth fire barn in 1903, a Classical Revival building by Smith Hoag with the horses on the ground floor and the firefighters upstairs. The horses gave way to engines, the building did not, and it was still running calls in 1991 as the last of the old barns in service. It went on the National Register the same year it was decommissioned and now holds the city's firefighting collection.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
