Fairchild and the planar process
1959
Charleston Road, Palo Alto, California
Eight men walked out on William Shockley and started a company a few miles away, where Jean Hoerni worked out how to build a transistor flat, protected under a layer of oxide, and Robert Noyce saw that flat components could be wired together on one piece of silicon. Nearly every chip since is a descendant. The eight went on to seed dozens of further companies, Intel among them.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
