The black waxy prairie south of Dallas grew cotton better than almost anywhere. Ellis County put out 91,298 bales in 1900 and a record 187,449 in 1912, and between 1895 and 1915 it repeatedly ranked first in Texas and first in the nation. Gins, compresses and rail spurs went up in every small town in the county to move the crop. The county was created in 1849 and named for Richard Ellis, who presided over the convention that declared Texas independent.
