Eliason builds the snowmobile
1924
Sayner, Wisconsin
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Carl Eliason, whose flat feet kept him off snowshoes, bolted a Johnson outboard motor to a toboggan with skis in the Sayner general store in 1924 and patented the motor toboggan in 1927, the machine every snowmobile descends from. The prototype sits in the little museum by the family store. The state that invented the machine now grooms more snowmobile trail miles than it has state highways.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
