Virgil White names the snowmobile
1917
West Ossipee, New Hampshire
In 1917 Virgil White, the Ford dealer in West Ossipee, patented a kit that put a Model T on front skis and rear tracks and called it a snowmobile, the first use of the word for a vehicle. From 1922 his factory here sold about 25,000 kits, many to rural doctors, mail carriers and others who had to travel unplowed roads. The one-person tracked sled that modern snowmobiles descend from came later, from Carl Eliason in Wisconsin.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
