Marietta, Georgia

Eighty-eight formerly enslaved members of Marietta's First Baptist Church, where they had been seated in the balcony, asked for letters of dismissal to start their own congregation. They were refused in 1865 and organised anyway on 8 April 1866, worshipping first under a brush arbour. The present brick building went up in 1888 and is now the Old Zion Heritage Museum, the main repository of Black history in Cobb County.
