Pilgrim Baptist Church, founded by people who came up the river out of slavery

Robert Thomas Hickman led a group of freedom seekers out of Boone County, Missouri and up the Mississippi in 1863, and the congregation they formed became the first predominantly Black church in Minnesota. It settled in the Rondo area and grew into an anchor of Black Saint Paul, running the meetings, the mutual aid and the politics that a segregated city gave Black residents nowhere else to hold. The 1928 building on Central Avenue West is the congregation's third home. It was the first place in Minnesota admitted to the National Park Service Underground Railroad Network to Freedom.
