1885
Fort Myers, Florida

Edison bought land here at thirty-eight and came down for nearly fifty winters, with Ford buying the house next door in 1916. In the 1920s the two of them, with Firestone, funded a search for a domestic rubber source in case of war, testing seventeen thousand plants in the laboratory here. Edison got usable rubber out of goldenrod. The banyan Firestone gave him is now the largest in the continental United States.
