East New York, the rival city John Pitkin tried to build from scratch
1835
East New York, Brooklyn, New York
Pitkin was a Connecticut merchant and a shoemaker's son who bought up the Dutch farmland north of New Lots Avenue in 1835, cut it into some twelve thousand lots and named it East New York because he expected it to outgrow the city across the river. He put a boot and shoe works at what is now Williams Street and Pitkin Avenue, and its hundred or so employees were the village's first residents. The Panic of 1837 forced him to sell most of it off.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
