Don Ellis's Grammy and his instruments sat in a Mesquite community college library
1981
Mesquite, Texas
Eastfield opened in Mesquite in 1970 as part of the Dallas community college system and now enrols more than 14,000 students. From 1981 until 2000 its library held the Don Ellis collection, including the jazz trumpeter and bandleader's own instruments and the Grammy he won for the score of The French Connection. An odd resting place for it, twelve miles from downtown Dallas and next to a suburban freeway.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
