Dixon Mills, where the yellow pencil was made

Joseph Dixon moved his graphite works to Jersey City in 1847 to make crucibles and stove polish, and pencils were a sideline until Civil War soldiers turned out to want something that wrote without ink. He built a machine that cut 132 pencils a minute, and by 1872 the works turned out 86,000 a day at five cents each. The company became Dixon Ticonderoga, and the mill buildings are apartments now.
