Death's Door
1871
Gills Rock, Wisconsin
The strait between the peninsula and Washington Island has shoals, cross-currents and no shelter, and the French named it Porte des Morts after a Potawatomi tradition of warriors lost crossing it. Something like two hundred and forty ships have been wrecked in and around it. The county takes its name from the strait, Door County is named for a body of water called the door of the dead.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
