Curries Woods, towers in the park and what replaced them
1959
Curries Woods, Greenville, Jersey City, New Jersey

This corner of Greenville had been a hundred acres of woodland and shoreline that people came to for picnics and skating. Voters approved ten million dollars in 1957 and the housing authority put up seven towers here, five of thirteen storeys and two of twelve, 712 units in all. By the 1990s the place was a byword for what high-rise public housing had gone wrong, and under HOPE VI six of the towers came down and 204 townhouses went up in their place by 2005.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
