Creedmoor, from rifle range to 7,000 patients

This land was a rifle range from the 1870s until 1892, the Creedmoor range where the National Rifle Association held its earliest matches and American teams shot against Ireland. In 1912 the state opened a farm colony for 32 psychiatric patients on the site. By 1959 Creedmoor held about 7,000 inpatients across a campus of more than fifty buildings, and it became one of the standing examples of what state hospitals had turned into. Deinstitutionalisation emptied most of it and much of the campus is still unused.
