Frank Doubleday moved his publishing house out of Manhattan in 1910 and built a printing plant in Garden City, landscaped like a country estate and named for the firm's magazine Country Life in America. Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone that August. Within months the plant had hired several hundred workers and was turning out thousands of books a day, and the Long Island Rail Road opened a station named after it to carry them in and out.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
