Como grew around a lake dug in 1889 and was first sold as a resort, named after the Italian one. It became one of Fort Worth's historically Black neighbourhoods, pressed against the wealthy Arlington Heights streets where many Como women worked. Viola Pitts, known locally as the unofficial mayor, had a polling place put in the Como elementary school so residents no longer had to walk a mile to vote, and she led the effort that took down a brick wall separating the neighbourhood from its neighbours.
