He bought a ranch house on a quiet suburban street, built a practice room over the garage, and in an upstairs bedroom in the autumn of 1964 wrote the four-part suite that is the summit of his work, a prayer set as music, more or less literally. He had less than three years to live. The house sat derelict for decades and was saved from demolition by the neighbours.
