The Chords worked out their harmonies in the halls and stairwells of the Bronx's first high school and in 1954 recorded Sh-Boom, the first record by a Black vocal group to cross over into the pop top ten. Morrisania turned out the Chantels and the Wrens on the same blocks, and the jazz rooms on Prospect Avenue, Club 845 and Sylvia's Blue Morocco, booked Charlie Parker, Coltrane and Dizzy Gillespie. Colin Powell finished at Morris in 1954, the year Sh-Boom charted.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
