Coal Creek and the mines that fuelled Seattle before Seattle amounted to much
1864

Surveyors found coal along this creek in January 1864 and the mining town of Newcastle grew up over the seams running under what is now Cougar Mountain. By the early 1870s it was sending seventy five to a hundred tons a day down to Seattle, and for a stretch it held more people than Seattle did. The workings ran until 1963 and gave up close to eleven million tons. Rusted equipment and loose coal still sit beside the creek trail.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
