Clinton, the town that became Brooklyn before Oakland took it

Two brothers named Patten leased land on the east side of the San Antonio Slough from the Peralta family in 1850 and joined with others to found the town of Clinton two years later. Clinton merged with San Antonio in 1856 under the name Brooklyn, taken from the ship that had carried Mormon settlers to California in 1846, and Brooklyn incorporated in 1870. Two years after that its voters agreed to be annexed by Oakland, which is how everything east of the lake became city.
