Florida Memorial moves onto an old Opa-locka airstrip after crosses burn on its lawn
1968
Miami Gardens, Florida
Trustees bought a 48-acre former airstrip near Opa-locka in 1965, and the school was still in St. Augustine when crosses were burned on its front lawn after the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr in 1968. It opened on the Miami land that November with only three buildings finished. The only historically Black university in South Florida, it later built an aviation centre that became its flagship programme, on ground that had been a runway.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
