Chadsey High School opened on Columbus Day and never let it go

Detroit opened Chadsey High on 12 October 1931, Columbus Day, and ran the date through the entire school: the teams were the Explorers, the newspaper was the Navigator, the yearbook was the Compass. It carried the name of Charles Chadsey, who ran the city's schools from 1912 to 1919, and it drew from the west side and southwest Detroit, with students from more than twenty countries in its later decades. The district closed it in June 2009 and the building was demolished in March 2011.
