Cawston Ostrich Farm brings ostriches from South Africa
1886
South Pasadena, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Edwin Cawston opened one of the first ostrich farms in the country here in 1886, on nine acres in the Arroyo Seco, stocked with birds shipped over from South Africa. Tourists came to see the birds and to buy plumes for hats. In 1887 the company backed a rail line out to the farm to carry the visitors.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
