Caterpillar and the crawler tractor
1925
East Peoria, Illinois
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Two California firms merged and moved the works to the Illinois River, where the track-laying tractor became the machine that built the interstates, the Alaska Highway and most of the airfields of the Second World War. The head office has since gone to the Chicago suburbs. The foundries and the test track stayed here, which is the part of the company that made the town.
