Cataloochee, the Smokies valley with the elk
1830
Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Haywood County, North Carolina
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Twelve hundred people farmed this valley before the park. Now there are two churches, a school, a few frame houses, and the elk the Park Service reintroduced in 2001 grazing the old fields at dusk. The gravel road in keeps the crowds down.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
