Carver born on the Moses farm
1864
Diamond, Missouri
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Born into slavery on this farm and kidnapped as an infant by raiders, Carver was traded back for a horse. He worked out how to restore land that cotton had stripped by rotating it with peanuts and sweet potatoes, then had to invent uses for the surplus to make farmers try it. This became the first national monument to an American who was neither white nor a president.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
