Harriett Pullman Carolan, daughter of the sleeping car magnate George Pullman, hired the French architect Ernest Sanson to design a Beaux-Arts chateau on the highest ground of her Hillsborough estate, with Willis Polk supervising in San Francisco and Achille Duchene laying out the grounds. It was finished in 1916 at around 46,000 square feet. She separated from her husband in 1917 and shut the house the following year. It survived decades of near demolition and is now a California Historical Landmark on the National Register.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
