Uplands, the Crocker heir's marble house that now holds classrooms
1917
Hillsborough, California
Charles Templeton Crocker, grandson of the Central Pacific builder Charles Crocker, married the C and H sugar heir Helene Irwin in 1912 and hired Willis Polk to design her a house on the family land above Burlingame. Building it took until 1917 and cost about 1.9 million dollars, producing some 35,000 square feet, twelve bedrooms and quarters for ten servants. The gardens Polk laid out are gone. Crystal Springs Uplands School occupies the house now, so a honeymoon present runs as a middle and high school.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
