Capitol Reef and the Waterpocket Fold

A hundred-mile wrinkle in the earth's crust, a monocline that blocked east-west travel so thoroughly that wagon parties called it a reef. Mormon settlers planted orchards in the one green valley, and the park still lets visitors pick the fruit.
