Cannery Row and the sardines that left
1945
Ocean View Avenue, Monterey, California
Tony Hisgett from Birmingham, UK · CC BY 2.0 · Wikimedia Commons
At the peak the canneries on this street processed a quarter of a million tons of sardines a year and the whole town smelled of it. Then the fish simply were not there, overfishing and an ocean cycle together, and within a few seasons the row was empty buildings. The street was renamed for Steinbeck's novel about the people who had worked it.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
