Cabbage Row, the real Catfish Row from Porgy and Bess
1925
Church Street, Charleston
DuBose Heyward set his novel in a courtyard tenement near his house, renaming it Catfish Row. Gershwin came to the Lowcountry in 1934 to hear Gullah singing before writing Porgy and Bess, which was barred from segregated theatres in the city until 1970.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
