Calvary Cemetery holds Dred Scott, Sherman and Kate Chopin
1854
St. Louis, Missouri
The Catholic archdiocese opened this ground in 1854 and it now covers 470 acres with more than three hundred thousand graves in it. Dred Scott is buried here, and so is William Tecumseh Sherman, who spent years in St. Louis before the war made him famous. The novelist Kate Chopin, the playwright Tennessee Williams, the ragtime pianist Louis Chauvin and Auguste Chouteau, who helped found the city in 1764, are all in the same cemetery.
