Brownwood sinks ten feet and becomes a marsh

Humble Oil executives laid out Brownwood on this peninsula from 1937 as the best address in Baytown. Decades of heavy groundwater pumping by industry and the growing towns collapsed the clay underneath, and the ground dropped ten to fifteen feet. Hurricane Carla flooded it in 1961, Hurricane Alicia finished it in 1983, and the federal government bought out the owners. The streets are under water now and the 450 acres are a bird sanctuary.
