Arcata treats its sewage with a marsh
1986
Arcata, California
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Ordered to join an expensive regional sewage plant, the town instead built a series of freshwater marshes on a former landfill and let plants and bacteria do the polishing. It cost a fraction as much, the water leaves clean enough for the bay, and the result is a 300-acre wildlife sanctuary with over 300 bird species that people walk their dogs in. It has been copied worldwide.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
