Alviso sinks below the tide
1915
Alviso, San Jose, California
A port town at the south end of the bay pumped so much groundwater for canneries and orchards that the ground itself dropped, thirteen feet over the century, until the streets sat below sea level behind levees. The wharf that made it a town is now a long way from navigable water, and the salt ponds around it run pink with brine algae.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
