Brooklyn, the oldest Black town in America
1873
Brooklyn, Illinois
Freed and fugitive families settled this ground two miles north of East St. Louis in the 1820s, led there by Priscilla Baltimore, who had bought her own freedom. Incorporated in 1873, it is the oldest majority Black incorporated town in the United States. For a stretch it went by Lovejoy, after the abolitionist printer a mob killed upriver at Alton. Its motto is still Founded by Chance, Sustained by Courage.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
