Brooklyn Children's Museum, the first of its kind anywhere

Opened in a Crown Heights Victorian house in December 1899 on a proposition nobody had tried: a museum whose collections were arranged for children to handle rather than adults to admire. Every children's museum in the world descends from it, including the far larger one in Indianapolis, whose founder came to Brooklyn to see how it worked. The institution moved underneath Brower Park in 1975 and now runs a library branch inside itself.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
