British troops burned Todd's Inheritance on their way out of Baltimore

The Todd family had farmed the tip of the peninsula since the 1600s, and in the war their house served the Americans as a lookout, signal station and courier post watching for the British fleet. Mounted sentries posted here on 11 September 1814 rode off to raise the alarm, and the British column tramped past the farm before dawn the next morning. Retreating on 14 September after North Point, the British burned the house. The family rebuilt it in 1816 and it stands as a museum, its plain Federal plan buried under later Italianate work.
