Bluefield's free lemonade
1939
Bluefield, Mercer County, West Virginia

A town at 2,600 feet that advertised itself as nature's air-conditioned city made a promise it has mostly not had to keep: if the temperature hits ninety, the chamber of commerce hands out free lemonade downtown. Some summers it never happens. The bet has been running since the 1930s and the stand still goes out when the thermometer cooperates.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
