Blasting Flood Rock out of Hell Gate
1885
Hell Gate, Astoria, Queens
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Clearing the reefs that wrecked ships in Hell Gate took the Army Corps of Engineers about seventy years. Cornish miners with steam drills dug galleries under Hallets reef from the Astoria shore, and 50,000 pounds of explosives brought it down in September 1876. The larger blast came on 10 October 1885, when 300,000 pounds destroyed Flood Rock, threw a column of water 250 feet into the air and was felt fifty miles away in Princeton. Rubble from it was used in 1890 to fill the gap between Great Mill Rock and Little Mill Rock and join them into one island.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
