Bladensburg, the seaport that silted up with its own tobacco fields

The town was laid out in 1742 at the head of navigation on the Anacostia, where the river ran about a mile wide and deep enough for ocean going ships, and it became a tobacco inspection port in 1747. Tobacco stripped the surrounding soil and the soil washed into the river. The channel had shoaled badly by 1800 and the last vessel left in the 1830s, leaving an inland town where a harbour used to be.
