Big Spring, a river coming out of a hillside
1924
Van Buren, Carter County, Missouri
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Something like 280 million gallons a day come up out of the rock here and run a short blue channel into the Current River, which makes it one of the largest springs in the country and possibly the world. The water falls as rain on the Ozark plateau, moves through limestone caves for miles, and arrives cold and faintly blue. It was a state park before the federal government folded it into the first national river in 1972.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
