Big Six Towers, built by the printers' union

New York Typographical Union No. 6, known in the trade as Big Six, unveiled plans in 1959 to house its printers and finished seven towers on twelve acres of Woodside in 1963, on a long term city held mortgage under the Mitchell-Lama programme. Frederick G. Frost designed the 982 unit co-operative, sold to members at cost rather than rented at a profit. The hot metal printing trade the union was built on has all but vanished from New York, and the towers are still a Mitchell-Lama co-op.
